US: Europe:
  9. Porsche working on hybrid SUV Details of gas-electric Cayenne promised in September FRANKFURT, Germany - German luxury carmaker Porsche in mid-September will provide the first details of plans to eventually build a hybrid version of its Cayenne sports utility vehicle, the company said on Monday. The Stuttgart-based carmaker is holding talks with potential partners in the industry to develop a more fuel-efficient derivative of its best-selling model amid sinking sales of the Cayenne in the United States. Hybrid cars, which trap and store brake energy to power an electric motor built alongside a conventional combustion engine, have enjoyed surprising success in the United States thanks to a painful rise in oil prices. North American sales of the Cayenne dropped 27 percent to 4,424 units in the first four months of the year, a decline that Porsche has blamed on a strong base comparison and production bottlenecks. A spokesman would not name companies with which Porsche is discussing the joint development of a hybrid powertrain, but the Handelsblatt newspaper reported on Monday that it was talking to Volkswagen, DaimlerChrysler and Toyota, citing company sources. Porsche aims to introduce a hybrid Cayenne at the latest when the next generation of its SUV is launched in 2008/2009, the German business daily added.

The combination rear lamps on the new Golf Plus have a two-part design. When switched off, four brilliant-white circles on a red base can be seen. The tail light, stop light and direction indicator are positioned at the respective outside edge of the vehicle. 36 LEDs per side serve as the light sources. For the tail light, all 72 LEDs emit red light. When the driver applies the brake, the two sets of 16 LEDs in the two inner circles light up with increased intensity and, together with the third stop lamp in the roof-edge spoiler (which also uses LED technology), form the now classic optical "warning triangle". When the driver switches on the direction indicator, the respective set of 20 LEDs in the outer lamp rings are activated and emit the prescribed amber light. This even works with the tail light switched on, since the LEDs have a two-colour design and the flashing amber colour outshines the red of the tail light. LEDs have safety-related advantages, particularly with regard to the stop light and the direction indicator: LEDs react much more quickly than conventional filament bulbs. Traffic following the vehicle is therefore warned earlier. A further advantage is the homogeneity of the illuminated areas. Thanks to the use of diodes, the functional areas can be implemented completely with a brilliant look for the first time, without coloured intermediate lenses being necessary. The reversing light and rear fog light still use conventional filament bulbs as light sources, since this technology is most suitable for these functions. Among the advantages cited for LEDs for front lighting are: Long life: Longer than the vehicle life Different colors: The chip can produce red, yellow or white light Low infrared emissions: This permits the use of plastic optics, which means that shapes can be produced that can't otherwise be attained Low power consumption: On the order of 15 to 20 W when used as daytime running lights, for example Electronic compatibility: Compatible with the increasing number of on-board electronics, and capable of doing things (e.g., switching from low beam to high or vice versa) faster than conventional bulbs.
